Where Are You From
PATERNAL SIDE
My dad's mom, Maria, is from Talamantes, Chihuahua. Her dad was a redhead whom they called "Colorado". He was also from Talamantes. He worked in the coal mines in Parral and also for a textile company in Talamantes. His wife, my grandma's mom, was a housewife.
My dad's dad, Melchor, is also from Talamantes. My dad's dad was Manuel and he was a farmer who owned animals and traded goods for a living. His wife was a housewife who would help by making candy out of goat milk as well as cookies.
My dad's parents met in Talamantes and fell in love. They had about 4 kids in talamantes and in 1966 they decided to move to Juarez, Chihuahua in hopes of having a better future. My dad was then born in Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua in 1971. My grandma is still living and she resides in Juarez, Chihuahua. My grandpa passed away from cancer about 15 years ago.
MATERNAL SIDE
My mom's mom Juana, is from Inde, Durango. Her dad Amado was also from Inde and he made a living out of his farm. In researching for this project, I learned that he was known in his ranch as a womanizer. Turns out it is believed that he had many children from different women so my mom might have some distant relatives we don't know about. His wife was a housewife who was very active in the church.
My mom's dad, Victor was from Inde as well. His dad was not known for much except for the fact that he was a gambler, drinker and an abusive husband to his wife. His wife was a housewife who sadly was abused throughout her marriage.
My mom's parents never really fell in love. My grandma says stories about how her husband, Victor was insistent on her dating him back in Inde. Eventually, she agreed and at the time marriage sounded convenient. She mentions that whenever she watches TV and sees people in love that it confuses her because she never got to experience that. My grandma and my grandpa moved to Juarez in 1955 in search of better jobs. Some of my uncles and aunts were born in Inde but my mom was born in Juarez, Chihuahua. My grandma is still living and my grandpa passed away 52 years ago from cancer, when my mom, the youngest, was only 1 year old.
PARENTS
My parents, Melchor Ponce and Xochitl Aida Urbina, met in Juarez Chihuahua in late 1990. They were both working for a restaurant and fell in love. My sibling and I were all born in Juarez, Chihuaha and resided there until 2001. In 2001, my uncle filed for residency for my mom and her family and we received it. My parents made the drastic decision to immigrate their famiy to El Paso, TX in hopes of the American dream. At the time, I was 9 years old, my sister was 7 and my brother was 5.
NOW
I began school in the U.S. in 4th grade. I used to live near central area of town and in 7th grade my parents purchased a home in Socorro, TX. I lived here up until I was 22 when my parents bought a new, dream home in the Montwood area. I got married last year at the age of 24 and my husband and I rent my parents Socorro home. I found out I am pregnant this year so my family and I will live in this home for a little until my husband and I purchase a new home.
